the company to expand its businesses into the upstream sector of LED industry
Foxconn did not specify what sector of the LED supply chain it plans to invest in, but most people believe it is LED lighting fixtures.
Other LED companies stated that Foxconn’s previous endeavor to break into the LED industry proved unsuccessful. Whether or not the company’s second attempt will succeed remains to be seen.
Foxconn’s venture capital firm successfully landed a slot on the board of Tera Xtal Techonlogy. Foxconn has subsidiary companies in thermal dissipation and LED package fields, allowing the company to expand its businesses into the upstream sector of LED industry. Currently the company also plans to make its way into the LED street lamp market.
Through its subsidiary company Foxconn Far East, Foxconn increases the capital of its electronic company in Suzhou, China, whose major products are socket and carrier-line systems, by US$56 million.

Lighting is poised to launch its solar LED lighting series in 2012
According to the company’s directors, the company makes full use of its unique heat sink and optoelectronic integration technologies to work out these high-power LED lights particularly for use in special working environments. And its 200W LED high bay lights have been widely adopted by mining companies in Africa and Australia to replace 500W mercury-vapor lights, while the 500W LED flood lights, featuring high brightness of over 30,000 lumens, have been credited as world’s only model that is functionally replaceable to 1,500W metal halide lamps.
Originally, the company is engaged in making optical discs, and when the market for optical discs has shrunk, it turns to LED lights. To fend off existing large-sized players in the new marketplace, the company’s directors said that it has mainly engaged itself in high-power models that call for higher technologies to carve out its niches. Presently, 200W-above models make up the majority of the company’s LED light portfolio.
Additionally, to boost its profile in the segment, LT Lighting is poised to launch its solar LED lighting series in 2012, which, given the solar cells effectively exposed to sunlight for a day, can keep working for three nights when running out of battery power with three-year warranty for the series as well as competitive prices.
Moving forward, the company is to penetrate the market for LED lights in developed countries as Germany and Switzerland in the short term.

Mitsubishi Electric have already to stop production of incandescent bulbs
According to Panasonic, the number of LED bulbs produced by the company has achieved to 48, however, the number of incandescent bulbs has greatly dropped from 207 in 2008 to 4. In the mean time, its competitors Toshiba and Mitsubishi Electric have already to stop production of incandescent bulbs.
Since 1936, the output of incandescent bulbs manufactured by Panasonic has amounted to 3.3 billion. And lighting has 20% share in the whole electric power demand in Japan. If all of incandescent bulbs are replaced by LEDs or energy lightings, it will greatly reduce the consumption of electric power. Currently, the share of low efficient lights achieves to 60% in Japanese lighting market.
Hai pointed out that a sign of the general decline was South Korea's launch of a low-price strategy to gain market share, followed by the adjustment downward of prices by distributors in the United States in June. and after a price reduction of 40 percent globally in 2011, LED product prices will fall another 20-30 percent in 2012.
InfiniLED, backed by ScienceWorks Ventures plc and a Tyndall National Institute (UCC) spin-out, has signed an access agreement with Tyndall National Institute, Cork (Tyndall).

their engineering efforts on advanced technology development
That Windows 8 is set to arrive in the near future raises further possibilities regarding the types of contributions GaN substrates bring. As an example, consider the fact that 20% of the Ultrabooks currently employing touch panels reportedly experience weakened brightness upon frequent use of the touch screen. A highly capable LED chip made from GaN substrates, in essence, can be utilized to amend issues like these in addition to improving resolution performance for devices like the Macbook Pro or enhancing displays for tablets like Microsoft’s soon to be released Surface.
these unpatterned wafer inspection systems are designed to meet the demanding defect and surface quality characterization requirements of the 20nm node and beyond, enabling control of the manufacturing process for 450mm polished silicon and epitaxial silicon substrates. The Surfscan SP3 450 also delivers critical capability for manufacturers of 450mm process equipment, such as wet clean tools, CMP pads, slurries and polishers, film deposition tools and annealing systems.
“Optimization of wafer quality and cleaning performance are important first steps toward demonstrating the potential economic benefits of the wafer size migration,” said Hans Lebon, fab manager at imec, a leading nanoelectronics research center in Leuven, Belgium. “Wafer manufacturers need to deliver substrates with pristine surfaces to meet chipmakers’ tight specifications. Equipment manufacturers need to ensure that they are not adding defects; that cleaning processes are effective; and that film quality is carefully controlled over a larger wafer area. The new Surfscan SP3 450 inspection system will help imec characterize the defectivity and surface quality of the wafer, map film thickness and roughness uniformity, and even identify annealing issues. We feel that it’s a critical enabling tool for the transition to 450mm.”
“Whether their wafers are 300mm or 450mm in diameter, our customers will need the performance that the Surfscan SP3 can deliver at the 20nm node and beyond,” said Ali Salehpour, senior vice president and general manager of the Surfscan / ADE division at KLA-Tencor. “The SP3 remains the only unpatterned inspection platform in the industry to use sensitivity-enabling deep ultra-violet (DUV) illumination, and it is the only tool of its kind with the ability to generate high-resolution maps of surface quality. Another advantage of the 450mm version of the Surfscan SP3 is that the performance and reliability of its optics and algorithms have already been proven on the more than fifty 300mm SP3’s installed at advanced development and production sites around the world. Confidence in their inspection platform will allow our customers to focus their engineering efforts on advanced technology development.”

Ontario are going to make LED streetlights transitions to reduce
And with Nexus 7 scheduled for launch this month, Unity begun shipping LED backlights at least two to three months ago. Since April, Unity has shipped over three million LED backlights for Nexus 7, and its shipments for “non-Apple” tablet computers are expected to reach 10 million units in 2012.
Unity is a major LED backlight supplier to Asus. This year non-Apple tablet computers are expected to take 30~ 40% market share to drive Unity’s LED backlight shipments to 10 million units this year, to generate demand for about 300 million LED chips.
Cities in northeastern Ontario are going to make LED streetlights transitions to reduce their electricity bills and save taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars.Sudbury plans to move to LED bulbs gradually, and will take a few years to do so. But over in North Bay, the light bulb change will be much faster. North Bay will spend $2.3 million to make every streetlight bulb to LED, by the end of 2012.
John Severino, North Bay's manager of environmental services, said the public doesn't pay much attention to street lighting. He said, "It's probably one of those things you don't really notice, except when the light goes out.” But Severino says once every bulb has been changed, the city's power bill should be $200,000 lighter."It's not one of those items that is talked about very much, but realizing savings in today's environment is very important,’ he said.

because prices of energy-saving lamps will be lowered with the subsidies
Wang Hong, director of the Engineering Research Center for Semiconductor Lighting at South China University of Technology, pointed out that, "Such a large subsidy will speed up the consolidation of the Led linear high bay light industry, while some small and medium-sized LED companies will be possibly forced to shut down."
Furthermore, Wang noted that large lighting producers with advanced technology in LED and energy conservation will benefit the most from the supportive program, because prices of energy-saving lamps will be lowered with the subsidies, which will enhance their competitiveness.
According to the 12th five-year plan (2011-15) for the semiconductor lighting sector released by the Ministry of Science and Technology in May, the value of LED lighting industry will reach 500 billion yuan by 2015, and the authorities will foster the development of a few large companies with core technologies. By 2015, there will be a maximum of 30 leading LED companies in the country.
However, small and medium-sized companies are thought to benefit less from the program. According to The Guangzhou-based Information Times newspaper reported earlier this month, the country now has over 8,000 LED companies, with many small and medium-sized companies on the verge of closure due to intensified competition. Huang Feng, a salesman at the LED high bay light showed his opinion that,"Though the subsidies will help cut the prices of LED lamps, I don't think the sales will rise on the whole, due to severe overcapacity in the sector.

the brightness in smartphone applications so embedded projectors with a system
The state-of-the-art lighting system, which is aimed at brightening the bridge and picking out its architectural features, had its first switch-on last night.Coloured bulbs, which vary in intensity, beamed from the central led high bay where giant Olympic Rings and the Paralympic Agitos, the swirling symbol of the Paralympics, will shine during the London 2012 Games.
An integrated miniature projector that can display images on a much larger surface than existing displays is the next giant leap for smartphones and cameras. This is known as embedded projection and uses LEDs as the light source. The greatest challenge so far for lighting technology has been the limited efficiency of the green light emitting diodes. This is because high brightness is essential if the projected image will be seen with ambient light. The Osram Ostar Projection Cube from Osram Opto Semiconductors is the perfect answer.
Efficient LEDs for red and blue light have been available for some time but LEDs that produce green with acceptable output have been rare. The new Osram Ostar Projection Cube from Osram Opto Semiconductors has now plugged this important gap. At 110 lumen per watt (lm/W) it is much more efficient than all other previously available green LEDs in the embedded projection sector.
For the first time, the Osram Ostar Projection Cube enables high output to be achieved in embedded projectors. "The new LED almost doubles the brightness in smartphone applications so embedded projectors with a system brightness of up to 25 lumen are possible", said Wolfgang Schnabel, Marketing Manager Projection at Osram Opto Semiconductors. This means that the LED high bay light is clearly visible even with ambient light and, thanks to the efficiency of LED technology, the projector can also be used in mobile applications with limited battery capacity.

The light power of the LED is retained
The mechanism behind this extraordinary development is the redistribution of color by means of “quantum dots”. The ability to tune the color of a quantum dot offers a way to redistribute the harsh LED light by placing a specially designed layer of quantum dots in front of the LED lamp thereby effectively transforming a portion of the overly abundant LED blue light into a warmer red light. The overall effect of the quantum dots is to produce illumination that is much closer to natural light.
This ability to redistribute color using a quantum dot is extraordinary. The fact that the conversion efficiency from turning blue light into red, or orange, or yellow is almost one-hundred percent was the final breakthrough. The light power of the LED is retained, only its color is changed. QD Vision uses this mechanism to manufacture a quantum dot thin-film-plate optic that is placed over the LED (refer to photo).
The QDVision Optic uses photoluminescence to achieve QLED performance. Photoluminescence occurs when incident light excites the quantum dot to emit. However, quantum dots can also be excited electrically (electroluminescence) and this characteristic opens up another realm of marketing possibilities. In fact, the company was recently awarded a 1.38 million dollar contract by the U. S. Department of Defense to develop specialized devices based on electroluminescent quantum dots.
QD Vision’s achievement in quantum dot nanotechnology has led to the creation of a more natural light that requires less power. In addition, the color of the light is precisely tunable. This breakthrough has opened the door to new possibilities in energy conservation.

the amount of rare earths which is necessary to make LED products
LEDs were designed for emission at 278nm and measured independently at ARL. SETi says the emission of 9.8mW at Led linear high bay light is the highest value ever reported for an LED shorter than 365nm at this forward current, and 30mW at 100mA.
According to Frans van Houten, CEO of Royal Philips Electronics, “We have launched some innovation projects in order to become less dependent on rare earths.” Mr van Houten explained creating the Led high bay light products will remain dependent on rare earths, it being a vital component to its efficiency. But such dependence can be lessened.
In his opinion, people cannot eliminate it of course. But in their labs thay have been able to find a way to significantly reduce the amount of rare earths which is necessary to make LED products.
Rare earths play an important role in high-tech industries, as they are widely used in manufacturing applications including aerospace, consumer electronics, automotive and telecommunications. They are abundant. But because of their geochemical properties, rare earths are dispersed and not often found in concentrated and economically exploitable forms.

Managers to look harder at their operating costs
And Independence LED's 300% increase in sales is well above the industry average. Charlie Szoradi – Independence LED, Founder and Chairman, has pointed out that " We credit our growth and leadership position to five key factors: Our Shift in Manufacturing from China to America, Thermal Management, UL Classification, Reseller Support, and the overall Recession that has forced Owners and Managers to look harder at their operating costs."
According to the company, firstly, in the summer of 2010, its manufacturing from China to Boyertown, PA and now produces LED Tubes with domestic and imported components.
Secondly, heat is the enemy of the Light Emitting Diode, and Independence LED has superior Thermal Management over imported LED Tubes. This is accomplished with the External Driver, Deep Fin Heat Sink, Surface Mounted Diodes, and thermally-conductive Printed Circuit Boards.Thirdly, its LED secured the Underwriters Laboratories (UL) Classification on its entire system of linear lighting rather than just the components.
For Manufacturer Reps and Distributors, Independence LED has hosted numerous LED Boot Camps over the years to support the "Solution" Selling approach to high performance lighting with ROI Calculators and a host of support files.

the ability to manage lighting in relationship to its needs and desires
ROAM provides Camelback Toyota outdoor luminaire monitoring and control through smart photocontrols (nodes) that diagnose fixture malfunctions and wirelessly communicate information to a central collection point or gateway. Data is transmitted to a Network Operations Center (NOC) via cellular uplink or Ethernet, with system owners/operators able to access luminaire information through a secure web portal from the Internet.
Michael Spector, Facilities/Inventory Director for Camelback Toyota, says there is no need to continuously check on the lighting fixtures or pay an auditing service person to confirm they are operational or require maintenance. “The ROAM system allows us to control lighting fixtures through a secure web portal rather than relying on inflexible control panels located in boxes installed throughout the parking lot," explained Spector.
From the web-based portal, Spector and his team have complete flexibility for scheduling, controlling and reporting. Andy Dickert, Deployment Manager for Acuity Brands Controls explains, "By design, the Camelback Toyota system is divided into two simple lighting groups, one that consists of twenty four, 400-watt lights in the front of the property and a second that comprises seventy-seven, 750-watt fixtures throughout the rest of the lot. This scheme gives Camelback the ability to manage lighting in relationship to its needs and desires."
Tally explains, "Many Arizona residents, especially during the summer, wait until sunset for outdoor activities to take advantage of the cooler temperatures. The ROAM system enables Camelback Toyota to schedule the appropriate lighting when and where it is needed in order to showcase its inventory and to ensure safety."

we expect significant strengthening of the market for sapphire substrates later this year
The near-term demand from the LED market continues to be limited, as inventory adjusts throughout the supply chain, but orders for two-inch and four-inch cores have begun to recover somewhat in the first quarter of 2012, and demand for large-diameter wafers for the Silicon on Sapphire (SoS) RFIC market is growing. As the channel inventory situation improves, and as LED technology further penetrates both the backlighting market and the general lighting market, we expect significant strengthening of the market for sapphire substrates later this year,” he said.
“We remain optimistic on the long-term outlook for the LED market and Rubicon’s positioning to capitalize on the opportunity. To date, Rubicon has shipped more than 230,000 six-inch sapphire wafers to the LED manufacturing and RFIC industries. This has provided us with the experience and scale to drive process and cost efficiencies throughout our system while maintaining our industry leading quality and service. Cost and quality leadership are instrumental to the acceleration of LED adoption in the marketplace and, as such, are strategic priorities for Rubicon,” Mr. Parvez concluded.
With the new price, the company expects that it will bolster both interest and investment in LED lighting. The company says cost has “everything” to do with how quickly energy-efficient technologies get adopted.Earlier, Noribachi launched LED Prix 2.0 an upgrade to its LED customization technology. The upgrade includes advancements in the thermal management of Noribachi’s custom retrofit bulbs and DLC certification for Noribachi’s key products. And in January, Sandia Resort & Casino in Albuquerque announced it expects to consume about a quarter the energy in its parking lots through switching hundreds of gas discharge lamps to Noribachi LED bulbs.

the lighting efficiency of their products while keeping manufacturing costs down
Eulitha AG, a pioneer and leader in the production of high-quality nanostructures using advanced lithography techniques, today announced that it has signed a joint-development and licensing agreement with EV Group (EVG), a leading supplier of wafer bonding and lithography equipment for the MEMS, nanotechnology and semiconductor markets. EVG will integrate Eulitha’s PHABLE mask-based ultraviolet (UV) photolithography technology with EVG’s automated mask aligner product platform with the goal of developing a low-cost-of-ownership (CoO) nanopatterning solution to enable the production of high-brightness light emitting diodes (HB-LEDs). With demo capabilities in place already, the first products are expected to ship in 2012.
According to LED market research firm Strategies Unlimited (Mountain View, Calif.), the market for high-brightness LEDs is expected to grow from $11.2 billion in 2010 to $16.2 billion in 2014, driven by applications such as TV backlighting, mobile devices and increasingly by lighting. To meet this increased demand, LED manufacturers need new manufacturing solutions that can increase the lighting efficiency of their products while keeping manufacturing costs down. Through their joint-development agreement, EV Group and Eulitha will explore new manufacturing technologies that support LED manufacturers’ cost and technology requirements.
Combining Eulitha’s full-field exposure technology with EVG’s well-established mask alignment platform provides low-cost, automated fabrication of photonic nanostructures over large areas, and supports the production of energy efficient LEDs, solar cells and liquid crystal displays. It combines the low cost, ease-of-use and non-contact capabilities of proximity lithography with sub-micron resolution—making it ideally suited for use in patterning sapphire substrates in order to enhance the light extraction (and thus the efficiency) of LED devices. EVG plans to offer a PHABLE enabled EVG620 system as an extension to its well-established mask alignment system platform, giving customers an even wider choice of configuration options.
We look forward to working with EV Group to greatly accelerate commercialization of PHABLE? through the integration of this novel technology with EVG’s industry-leading mask aligner platform,” stated Harun Solak, CEO of Eulitha. “We believe the synergies of our respective technologies have great potential to provide the resolution and volume-production capabilities of led linear lighting lithography steppers at a fraction of the cost—enabling LED, optics and photonics manufacturers with extremely tight cost constraints the opportunity to extend their technology roadmaps to higher levels of performance.”

the maintenance of LED light because the similar problem in other project
According to an official, when the directives were given to the CDA, some official are concerned about the huge cost of the project. The estimated cost of the project was over Rs 6 billion and it would cause a huge lose to the national exchequer, in case of a failure. Some high-ups of led high bay light also showed concern about the maintenance of LED light because the similar problem in other projects. “Currently, the CDA electrical maintenance wing has no technical staff to for the purpose.”
He said the CDA was paying an amount of around Rs 120 million per month on electricity bills and unable to disburse the overdue amount to the Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO). “The IESCO has several time disconnected power supply of the CDA due to huge overdue bill,” he said.
The official said the cost for running and maintaining the streetlights had increased by 30 to 40 per cent in the last couple of years, and these figures did not include the salary of the 400 employees, who were part of the electrical maintenance wing. The non-development expenditure crossed Rs 6 billion while the authority earned only Rs2 billion through taxes, due to which the CDA is coping with severe financial crises.
In terms of regional performance, Taiwan still topped the market with a total output value of US$4.54 billion in 2011 -- including those of the upstream epitaxial wafers -- although the figure declined 0.4 percent from last year's US$4.56 billion.

it is working with several retailers to market its products
Additionally, the company has opened an led linear high bay light venture to promote its branded lighting products for project and commercial purposes in Taiwan. In mainland China, it is working with several retailers to market its products.
Chong noted that as Osram, Philips and GE have only controlled a combined 30% of global lighting market his company sill has an ample room to win a larger slice of the LED lighting market by working with brand-name luminaire manufacturers, a strategy similar to the one that has led to MediaTek’s success in becoming mainland China’s No.1 supplier of mobile phone chipsets.
Meanwhile, the company has just started to enter South Korea and Japan market. And it is also tapping into Turkey and Russia. The Regza 32BE3 incorporates the Eco Chip and a large-capacity capacitor. The Eco Chip is driven by electricity stored in the capacitor, and AC power is cut by a relay. As a result, the standby power consumption of the TV is equivalent to the power consumption of an unplugged TV.
The Eco Chip has a timer function. The relay and the light-receiving elements that receive signals from the remote are powered by the capacitor. Therefore, it is possible to use the remote to operate the led high bay light and set a timer recording even when the standby power consumption of the TV is "zero."
