Energy efficiency retrofits can produce big savings for commercial building owners with little upfront costs

But trying to gather the initial capital expense, which ran upwards of $500,000, for retrofitting a seemngly new, three-year old facility was of a tough sell, said Tavares. The company received a number of incentives from the local utility National Grid, including a finance program that covers 70 percent of energy efficiency upgrade costs with an option to finance the remaining 30 percent with no interest over the next two years.

“We are committed to promoting and offering programs that will help our customers save money while reducing their carbon footprint,” said Marcy Reed, president, National Grid, MA in statement about the project. “We’re proud to partner with [Atlas Box] and help defray the costs through program incentives that will make the project a reality."

Energy efficiency retrofits can produce big savings for commercial building owners with little upfront costs.FirstFuel, a Boston-based energy analytics startup, released a report revealing 51 percent of all energy efficiency opportunities could be achieved through low and no-cost operational improvements. They calculated the savings over the entire U.S. commercial building market as a $17 billion opportunity for operational improvements.

Buck LED Driver with power factor correction (PFC). The device uses a digital technique that allows it to automatically detect the AC input voltage condition, allowing it to create a special internal reference signal that results in high power factor correction. The FL7701 will also work from a DC input voltage condition, automatically sensing AC versus DC input voltage conditions. The traditional technique of using a transformer in an MR application incurs additional losses with the transformer conversion; this traditional inefficient method can now be replaced using the FL7701 connected directly to a DC or AC off-line input.

the new LED is suited to be driven by a high current

At the show, Tamura and Koha showcased two kinds of white LEDs that use 0.3 x 0.3mm and 2 x 2mm blue LED chips, respectively. Their driving currents are 400mA and 6A. The brightness of the LED high bay light the 2 x 2mm chip is about 500lm. And the companies aim to increase it to 2,000 to 3,000lm, which is difficult to realize by using a sapphire substrate.

With a blue LED chip formed on a sapphire substrate, it is necessary to use the "horizontal structure," in which anode and cathode electrodes are horizontally arranged because a sapphire substrate is an insulator. On the other hand, a β-type Ga2O3 substrate has a high electrical conductivity and allows to use the "vertical structure," in which anode and cathode electrodes are formed on the top and bottom sides of an LED chip.

Compared with the horizontal structure, the vertical structure makes it easier to reduce element and heat resistances and to realize an even current distribution. The smaller the element and heat resistances, the smaller the amount of heat generated by an LED chip. Therefore, the new LED is suited to be driven by a high current.

Though GaN substrates are also suited for making high-output LEDs, β-type Ga2O3 substrates realize lower costs, Tamura and Koha said. Currently, GaN substrates are manufactured by using a vapor-phase epitaxial method called HVPE. On the other hand, β-type Ga2O3 substrates are manufactured by the melt growth method, which is theoretically suited for improving the quality of substrate and increasing substrate size.

No more halogen. No more Sparsam low-energy bulbs. No more fluorescent lights. We’re putting all our development and design efforts behind LEDs because we think  everyone  should be able to afford to illuminate their lives with the most sustainable lighting available.”

the LED lighting market to lift their sales

Tong, the director of the Green Energy and Environment Research Laboratories under the government-financed Industrial Technology Research Institute, said he expects LED lights to account for half of the global lighting business in 2020 if its current pace of growth continues.

Analysts said several Taiwanese LED product suppliers, such as Delta Electronics, Chicony Power Technology, Lite-On Technology and Edison Opto, have devoted increasing resources to penetrating the LED lighting market to lift their sales.

According to industry experts, backed by strong activity on the policy reforms front, the Rs 9,600 crore lighting industry is expecting to clock a healthy growth in 2013. Even though the industry faced some rough weather on project sales, the consumer category is said to be witnessing good growth.

Arun Gupta, global CEO, NTL Lemnis, pointed out that, the LED Industry is expected to reach around US $ 500 million by 2015 in India. Within the segment, LED street light and LED solar light's demand to increase by leaps and bounds in coming years,'' said Arun Gupta, global CEO, NTL Lemnis.

As per Elcoma, the industry body representing electric lamp and component manufacturers, the lighting industry in India is growing at nearly 17-18% per annum over the last two to three years. In order to focus attention on this industry and ensure that it derives the maximum attention by policy makers, Elcoma has established a secretariat in Delhi to follow up not only with the government, but with all concerned stakeholders and decision makers,'' said Gupta.

how much color correction would be required to produce acceptable results with that light

There has been similar enthusiasm for studio LEDs elsewhere, and they have been used in the U.S. for filming popular prime-time reality TV competitions such as "Dancing with the Stars," "America's Got Talent" and "American Idol."

But now the EBU suggests it may be premature to embrace LEDs fully in the studio, even if they are now ready for the home. Problems that have been identified include inconsistencies between factory batches, insufficient brightness and inability to spotlight subjects, especially from a great distance. A further issue is that color LED lights are prone to color shifts and inconsistencies that can be especially evident when lighting people's faces.

The EBU is not suggesting broadcasters should avoid LEDs, but urges them to recognize that many new LED lights fail to perform as well as had been expected or promised. The EBU has come up with its own recommendation to help broadcasters assess how well their television lighting performs. Called R 137, and accompanied by a software-based analysis tool, this is designed to quantify how well a set of test colors is reproduced when illuminated under a given light and viewed through a standardized camera and TV system. The software compares the differences in colors produced by the light source under test with those rendered under standard lighting conditions. It assigns a value from 0 to 100 to each light tested, and that value gives an indication of how much color correction would be required to produce acceptable results with that light.

In addition to the value assigned to the light, the software also provides additional information that can be used to advise colorists on how much correction is needed. In cases where the value assigned to a light is less than 50, the results may still be unacceptable, even given a lot of correction.

This disruptive technology will help us achieve a sustainable society

After installation and commissioning the system is now ready to produce high quality GaN epi-wafers. “This is an important step for us”, Dr. NaiQian Zhang, President and CEO of Dynax Semiconductors, comments. “High power and high efficiency GaN electronic devices are the key components for next generation power management and data communications. This disruptive technology will help us achieve a sustainable society. The AIXTRON reactor is a proven system for this application".

Dr. Frank Wischmeyer, Vice President and Program Manager Power Electronics at AIXTRON, says “The Dynax technical team already has extensive experience with AIXTRON’s CCS technology. We are looking forward to supporting the customer with our expertise on accelerating the GaN power device market introduction in China.”

Compared to conventional silicon devices, GaN electronic devices provide superior performance in high frequency (RF) and power electronic applications in terms of efficiency and power density. Two major challenges however have to be met: due to the strong lattice mismatch between GaN and foreign substrates, GaN has to be grown in a special process. To compete with silicon devices, manufacturing costs have to be as low as possible which requires state-of-the-art MOCVD technology to provide high uniformity and reproducibility.

An intrinsic part of this massive reshuffle of two of the world’s largest technology brands is that lighting giant Osram will cut another 4700 jobs (12% of its workforce) by 2014, as the firm - alongside the wider lighting industry - tries to deal with global markets’ legislation- and technology-led transition from traditional lighting sources (such as incandescent and fluorescent) to solid-state technologies.

Design considerations for enhancing LED efficiency

Lumileds will offer the LEDs in 3-step MacAdam ellipse bins, tested at 85°C. Lesaicherre said that the company is not matching phosphor tiles with emitters the way it did in the original Rebel Lumiramic-based LED high bay light to reach the tight binning, but instead controlling the epitaxial (epi) process more tightly.

Indeed, better process control is behind both the binning and the lower forward voltage. Lesaicherre said, "The conversion to 6-in substrates has really helped because we have more modern equipment." Specifically, he said they have tighter control of temperature and gas distribution in the epi process.

"We change our epi recipe every six months on average," said Lesaicherre. The Luxeon T is made with the latest recipe. Moreover, the company developed chip-architectural and packaging enhancements to maximize light output and efficacy.

The new family utilizes a chip-in-frame package with a tightly coupled optical dome. The combination of a small 2-mm2 emitting surface and properly sized dome is critical in directional applications. For more detail on that topic, see our recent article, "Design considerations for enhancing LED efficiency."

their product life cycle or the closure of smaller plants with lower sales

Due to the fundamental change in the lighting sector, Osram had already announced in January 2012 that it would adjust its capacities and in doing so adjust its workforce both nationally and internationally by the end of LED high bay light. In implementing these measures some 1,900 jobs have already been reduced worldwide in fiscal 2012, of which 300 were in German locations.

With the newly defined measures the number of employees will be reduced further by 2014, particularly outside of Germany. Based on current plans – in addition to the 1,000 jobs already communicated in January – a further 400 jobs will be affected in Germany primarily related to the sites in Berlin, Wipperfürth and Munich. The measures in Germany and internationally are aimed at plants with products at the end of their product life cycle or the closure of smaller plants with lower sales. At the same time, Osram is aiming to restore profitability with efficient structures in production, research & development, sales as well as in central functions.

“We are consequently treading the path of corporate reorganization and in doing so are entering the digital lighting age. Compared to traditional products, the depth of our added value in LED-based products will be significantly reduced. Consequently, the personnel increase in the future fields will only partially compensate for the change in the traditional business,” said Wolfgang Dehen, CEO of OSRAM Licht AG.

Osram is building up capacities in future-oriented business areas. As such the company created 200 jobs in the past fiscal year in Germany alone. During the course of the year, the company also inaugurated a new halogen production line at its Eichst?tt location with construction of a second line already underway. Osram also jointly developed a future concept with employee representatives at its Augsburg site. Key aspects of this concept are the development of the location into a center of excellence for manufacturing processes of LED-based products or the expansion of the fluorescent lamp production. Osram will invest a low three-digit million euro figure over the coming years in its LED assembly plant in the Chinese province of Jiangsu. In the final completion stage, 1,700 employees will manufacture products for key segments of the Chinese market and entire Asian region. The region will already account for around half of the global general lighting market in five years’ time.

you paid for it; no one wanted to rent it anymore

Bright ideas are often depicted with a light bulb. And in Hollywood these days, that light is more likely to be LED than the traditional tungsten.

The industry standard is shifting as cinematographers are turning to light-emitting diodes to illuminate their sets more efficiently and with less heat than tungsten lighting, according to Variety.

But not all LEDs are created the same, so companies that rent the equipment to productions are taking a wait-and-see approach to which brand will be in demand.

“Every cinematographer is going to have their own taste for how something should look, and right now, there are still questions about LED high bay light how different brands of LED lights will interact on a set,” Chris Rogers, national account manager for Cinelease – a rental company – told Variety. “So we're waiting to see what our customers decide they like.”

New technology is a tricky business for rental companies. And digital equipment in particular poses unique problems because it is updated more frequently than mechanical equipment and has a shorter lifespan.

“People got burned with camera equipment (in 2002), because just after ‘Star Wars: Episode 2 (Attack of the Clones)’ was shot using the Sony F900, there was very little lag time until the next round of digital cameras came out,” said Johnathon Amayo, VP of production and post-production for Moviola. “So, basically, if you carried the F900, once the (lower-cost) Red came out, you had a camera that was worth one-tenth of what you paid for it; no one wanted to rent it anymore.”

The transition to LED lighting appears to be taking longer than the move to digital cameras, creating headaches for rental houses. Lighting is a new frontier that has not been fully explored. There are many options available – LED and tungsten – and the market has not yet.spoken definitively on the matter.

The authors of the study are from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science

The nanostructures on an LED lens surface were fabricated by using a large-area nanotemplating and reconfigurable nanomolding with heat-induced shear thinning. The biologically inspired LED lens, distinct from a smooth surface lens, substantially increases light transmission over visible ranges, comparable to conventional antireflection coating. This biological inspiration can offer new opportunities for increasing the light extraction efficiency of high-power LED packages," they wrote. They noted that the conventional anti-reflection coating of existing LED lights is an expensive process. They said that conventional polymer lenses for LEDs are made by injection molding and then adding an antireflective coating with sputtering. Their method differed. They found that they could produce an anti-reflective plastic lens with just a single-step injection molding process. They said doing so meant driving down the cost of efficient LEDs. Their LED lens was made using a polyurethane-based optical resin. The authors of the study are from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, Firefly Institute, Korea Basic Science Institute, and Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science.

Advanced Technologies announced on Oct. 31, that it is streamlining worldwide operations to better align its cost structure with current market conditions and enhance its ability to pursue strategic growth initiatives, including the consolidation of existing business units into a single Crystal Growth Systems (CGS) group and cost reduction actions including an approximately 25 percent reduction of the company’s global workforce.

When fully implemented, the workforce reduction is expected to reduce the company’s annualized expenses by approximately $13 million. GT expects to record restructuring charges associated with these actions in the amount of approximately $4.2 million in the December quarter.
