Systems built with such devices could be more compact

One system, capable of handling 6x2-inch substrates, focuses primarily on R&D, while the other system, a CRIUS, is designed for mass production, handling up to 31x2-inch or 3x6-inch substrates in one run.

Dr. Hui Yang, Director of SINANO, reports: “Our Nano-Devices and Materials Division will use these systems to develop new applications such as gallium nitride (GaN) lasers on the 2-inch R&D system and GaN growth on silicon substrates and high electron mobility transistors (HEMT) on the CRIUS system.”

The Nano-Devices and Materials Division was established in 2006, with one of its research groups focusing on GaN-based high power light-emitting diodes (LED) and laser diodes (LDs) with an AIXTRON CCS 6x2-inch system. The division now wants to extend its expertise into the power electronics field.

GaN-based HEMTs are being widely developed on silicon as a route to mass production of high power density devices for radio frequency and power switching applications. Systems built with such devices could be more compact and more power efficient, needing less complex circuitry with fewer passive components and reduced cooling requirements.

These products will provide an ideal replacement for incandescent

In indoor applications, where warm light is particularly important, these products will provide an ideal replacement for incandescent and halogen lamps. In outdoor applications, such as road lighting, the high light output, high colour rendering and warmer appearance provides a particularly suitable replacement to SON-T street lights.

“The research and development cooperation between CREE and ALT will allow us to provide suitable products for a wide variety of customers and continue to facilitate the growth of the LED industry”, commented Aeon Lighting Technology CEO, James Laing.

We are cautious about short-term business conditions since there is still no clear sign that the economy is improving,” added Mr. Peeler. “However, the LED market is getting better – general lighting is growing, excess capacity is being absorbed, and customers are reporting more stable business conditions. An MOCVD order snap-back is inevitable as LEDs go from 5% of all lighting to over 30% over the next few years. Insatiable demand for storage will drive future hard drive industry capital expenditures and technology investments. We anticipate that Veeco’s orders will improve in the coming quarters.”

“In the meantime, we are focused on lowering our cost structure while protecting investments in R&D and new products,” concluded Mr. Peeler. “Our goal is to remain profitable while funding our future. We are market leaders with exceptional technology and customer roadmap alignment. We are well positioned for future growth as our end markets recover and the world adopts solid state lighting.”

The price of LED light sources in the future

A unique feature of the X10 is a combination of small size, state-of-the-art module efficiency over 110lm/W, the optimal price and convenient size for mounting. Optogan has already produced modules consisting of 72 items that can be easily divided into LED elements of smaller sizes and power. The X10 concept offers the maximum possible variety starting with single unit of 10 W. The biggest X10 module can provide maximum luminous flux of nearly 80,000 lumens, while the power consumption is only 720W. Due to various sizes and forms of the elements, X10 can be used for various applications, such as halogen lamp analogues, light fittings, single designer lamps, fixtures with reflectors, as well as high power industrial or street lights. The ceramic base and product material selection is based on long life performance by design.

Optogan`s X10 patented design is unique on the LED market and was developed jointly with the well-known Russian Innovation Center "Skolkovo". The pilot sample of the X10 solution was already introduced in 2011 and has by now won the recognition of the international community at the largest lighting exhibitions, such as Light & Building in Frankfurt am Main or Strategies in Light Europe in Munich. “It's great that, thanks to the material and technical base of the Innovation Centre Skolkovo our breakthrough technology does not stagnate in the laboratory, and only after a year goes to the mass market. It is a high contribution for the hi-tech industry” – emphasized Vladislav Bougrov.

Optogan`s X10 module is a new generation of integrated solutions like LED Chip-on-Board, which are the main focus of technological development of the global LED industry. As Vladislav Bugrov explained during the opening ceremony, Optogan strives “to make the transition from a single breakthrough LED, which is already implemented in the technology Chip-on-board, to the integrated lighting system, including the assembly of LEDs on a single substrate, the circuit elements and the power control (driver), as well as the primary optics. Such a breakthrough is possible due to the continuous research, conducted at the Optogan`s research and development center”. According to Bougrov, “full integration, in particular, will significantly reduce the cost of the production process, significantly decreasing the price of LED light sources in the future”.

Zhaga has made the interface specification ‘Book 3’ publicly available as free download from its website (zhagastandard.org). Book 3 defines the interface for a small, round, LED light engine suitable for spot lighting and other applications that need a point light source.

The results can start to reshape an industry

This collaboration was about giving the architecturalcommunity what it wanted—an uninterrupted ceilingand lighting system in one package that makes designer projects much easier,” says Jaime Irick, general manager forGE Lighting North America Professional Solutions. “When two innovation leaders like USG and GE come together as our teams have done, the results can start to reshape an industry.”

GE’s Lumination LED Linear Recessed Luminairesare available in four- and five-foot fixtures measuring four or six inches wide to fit Logix layouts. They consume less electricity than traditional light sources and last years longer before needing replacement.

“The continuous look of Logix panels and Lumination LED lighting is ideal for environments where a clean, uncluttered ceiling is as much a fashionable as functional solution,” says Chris Griffin, USG executive vice president, operations. “It has long been a problem to piece together a custom look without the custom price, but now specifying, estimating, ordering and constructing the ceiling your customer always wanted is simple.”

The fourth Professional Lighting Design Convention will be held in Copenhagen, Denmark from 31. October to 2. November, 2013, following in the footsteps of PLDC 2007 in London, UK, PLDC 2009 in Berlin, Germany and PLDC 2011 in Madrid, Spain.

the ideal way to present merchandise in the best possible lighting settings

The LEC Supermarket area helps planners get a better understanding on the impact of light on different types of food.It has been proven that lighting plays a significant role in the display of products and impacts how a product looks. An example is the use of white light—while it can make fish look fresh, it has a reverse impact on meats, which look better under yellow light.

In this area, visitors experience the ideal way to present merchandise in the best possible lighting settings. Lighting has been found to play significant role in creating a shop’s brand identity while making products look impressive and boost sales. The display demonstrates the various scenarios of lighting that would typically vary while selling ornaments and watches compared to selling clothes and gadgets.

The Zero Energy House, owned by Auckland couple Jo Woods and Shay Brazier, is being built in Point Chevalier using careful design and solar power. Zero Energy means that, over the course of a year, the house will generate as much energy as Shay and Jo will use. At times they will generate more energy than they need, and will use a grid connection to sell this surplus energy back to their electricity company.

Jo and Shay chose Philips’ lighting products for the house because the extensive range of Philips Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) met all of their lighting design requirements. The lighting for the house has been designed so that each area is lit according to its specific needs, which means that the right amount of light is delivered to make each area work as it should. The targeted lighting design strategy also meant that the number of energy efficient lights and the power of these lights was carefully considered, reducing both the cost of installing the lights in the house and also reducing the ongoing cost to operate them.
