Energy efficiency retrofits can produce big savings for commercial building owners with little upfront costs
But trying to gather the initial capital expense, which ran upwards of $500,000, for retrofitting a seemngly new, three-year old facility was of a tough sell, said Tavares. The company received a number of incentives from the local utility National Grid, including a finance program that covers 70 percent of energy efficiency upgrade costs with an option to finance the remaining 30 percent with no interest over the next two years.
“We are committed to promoting and offering programs that will help our customers save money while reducing their carbon footprint,” said Marcy Reed, president, National Grid, MA in statement about the project. “We’re proud to partner with [Atlas Box] and help defray the costs through program incentives that will make the project a reality."
Energy efficiency retrofits can produce big savings for commercial building owners with little upfront costs.FirstFuel, a Boston-based energy analytics startup, released a report revealing 51 percent of all energy efficiency opportunities could be achieved through low and no-cost operational improvements. They calculated the savings over the entire U.S. commercial building market as a $17 billion opportunity for operational improvements.
Buck LED Driver with power factor correction (PFC). The device uses a digital technique that allows it to automatically detect the AC input voltage condition, allowing it to create a special internal reference signal that results in high power factor correction. The FL7701 will also work from a DC input voltage condition, automatically sensing AC versus DC input voltage conditions. The traditional technique of using a transformer in an MR application incurs additional losses with the transformer conversion; this traditional inefficient method can now be replaced using the FL7701 connected directly to a DC or AC off-line input.

the new LED is suited to be driven by a high current
At the show, Tamura and Koha showcased two kinds of white LEDs that use 0.3 x 0.3mm and 2 x 2mm blue LED chips, respectively. Their driving currents are 400mA and 6A. The brightness of the LED high bay light the 2 x 2mm chip is about 500lm. And the companies aim to increase it to 2,000 to 3,000lm, which is difficult to realize by using a sapphire substrate.
With a blue LED chip formed on a sapphire substrate, it is necessary to use the "horizontal structure," in which anode and cathode electrodes are horizontally arranged because a sapphire substrate is an insulator. On the other hand, a β-type Ga2O3 substrate has a high electrical conductivity and allows to use the "vertical structure," in which anode and cathode electrodes are formed on the top and bottom sides of an LED chip.
Compared with the horizontal structure, the vertical structure makes it easier to reduce element and heat resistances and to realize an even current distribution. The smaller the element and heat resistances, the smaller the amount of heat generated by an LED chip. Therefore, the new LED is suited to be driven by a high current.
Though GaN substrates are also suited for making high-output LEDs, β-type Ga2O3 substrates realize lower costs, Tamura and Koha said. Currently, GaN substrates are manufactured by using a vapor-phase epitaxial method called HVPE. On the other hand, β-type Ga2O3 substrates are manufactured by the melt growth method, which is theoretically suited for improving the quality of substrate and increasing substrate size.
No more halogen. No more Sparsam low-energy bulbs. No more fluorescent lights. We’re putting all our development and design efforts behind LEDs because we think everyone should be able to afford to illuminate their lives with the most sustainable lighting available.”

how much color correction would be required to produce acceptable results with that light
There has been similar enthusiasm for studio LEDs elsewhere, and they have been used in the U.S. for filming popular prime-time reality TV competitions such as "Dancing with the Stars," "America's Got Talent" and "American Idol."
But now the EBU suggests it may be premature to embrace LEDs fully in the studio, even if they are now ready for the home. Problems that have been identified include inconsistencies between factory batches, insufficient brightness and inability to spotlight subjects, especially from a great distance. A further issue is that color LED lights are prone to color shifts and inconsistencies that can be especially evident when lighting people's faces.
The EBU is not suggesting broadcasters should avoid LEDs, but urges them to recognize that many new LED lights fail to perform as well as had been expected or promised. The EBU has come up with its own recommendation to help broadcasters assess how well their television lighting performs. Called R 137, and accompanied by a software-based analysis tool, this is designed to quantify how well a set of test colors is reproduced when illuminated under a given light and viewed through a standardized camera and TV system. The software compares the differences in colors produced by the light source under test with those rendered under standard lighting conditions. It assigns a value from 0 to 100 to each light tested, and that value gives an indication of how much color correction would be required to produce acceptable results with that light.
In addition to the value assigned to the light, the software also provides additional information that can be used to advise colorists on how much correction is needed. In cases where the value assigned to a light is less than 50, the results may still be unacceptable, even given a lot of correction.

After installation and commissioning the system is now ready to produce high quality GaN epi-wafers. “This is an important step for us”, Dr. NaiQian Zhang, President and CEO of Dynax Semiconductors, comments. “High power and high efficiency GaN electronic devices are the key components for next generation power management and data communications. This disruptive technology will help us achieve a sustainable society. The AIXTRON reactor is a proven system for this application".
Dr. Frank Wischmeyer, Vice President and Program Manager Power Electronics at AIXTRON, says “The Dynax technical team already has extensive experience with AIXTRON’s CCS technology. We are looking forward to supporting the customer with our expertise on accelerating the GaN power device market introduction in China.”
Compared to conventional silicon devices, GaN electronic devices provide superior performance in high frequency (RF) and power electronic applications in terms of efficiency and power density. Two major challenges however have to be met: due to the strong lattice mismatch between GaN and foreign substrates, GaN has to be grown in a special process. To compete with silicon devices, manufacturing costs have to be as low as possible which requires state-of-the-art MOCVD technology to provide high uniformity and reproducibility.
An intrinsic part of this massive reshuffle of two of the world’s largest technology brands is that lighting giant Osram will cut another 4700 jobs (12% of its workforce) by 2014, as the firm - alongside the wider lighting industry - tries to deal with global markets’ legislation- and technology-led transition from traditional lighting sources (such as incandescent and fluorescent) to solid-state technologies.

Design considerations for enhancing LED efficiency
Lumileds will offer the LEDs in 3-step MacAdam ellipse bins, tested at 85°C. Lesaicherre said that the company is not matching phosphor tiles with emitters the way it did in the original Rebel Lumiramic-based LED high bay light to reach the tight binning, but instead controlling the epitaxial (epi) process more tightly.
Indeed, better process control is behind both the binning and the lower forward voltage. Lesaicherre said, "The conversion to 6-in substrates has really helped because we have more modern equipment." Specifically, he said they have tighter control of temperature and gas distribution in the epi process.
"We change our epi recipe every six months on average," said Lesaicherre. The Luxeon T is made with the latest recipe. Moreover, the company developed chip-architectural and packaging enhancements to maximize light output and efficacy.
The new family utilizes a chip-in-frame package with a tightly coupled optical dome. The combination of a small 2-mm2 emitting surface and properly sized dome is critical in directional applications. For more detail on that topic, see our recent article, "Design considerations for enhancing LED efficiency."

their product life cycle or the closure of smaller plants with lower sales
Due to the fundamental change in the lighting sector, Osram had already announced in January 2012 that it would adjust its capacities and in doing so adjust its workforce both nationally and internationally by the end of LED high bay light. In implementing these measures some 1,900 jobs have already been reduced worldwide in fiscal 2012, of which 300 were in German locations.
With the newly defined measures the number of employees will be reduced further by 2014, particularly outside of Germany. Based on current plans – in addition to the 1,000 jobs already communicated in January – a further 400 jobs will be affected in Germany primarily related to the sites in Berlin, Wipperfürth and Munich. The measures in Germany and internationally are aimed at plants with products at the end of their product life cycle or the closure of smaller plants with lower sales. At the same time, Osram is aiming to restore profitability with efficient structures in production, research & development, sales as well as in central functions.
“We are consequently treading the path of corporate reorganization and in doing so are entering the digital lighting age. Compared to traditional products, the depth of our added value in LED-based products will be significantly reduced. Consequently, the personnel increase in the future fields will only partially compensate for the change in the traditional business,” said Wolfgang Dehen, CEO of OSRAM Licht AG.
Osram is building up capacities in future-oriented business areas. As such the company created 200 jobs in the past fiscal year in Germany alone. During the course of the year, the company also inaugurated a new halogen production line at its Eichst?tt location with construction of a second line already underway. Osram also jointly developed a future concept with employee representatives at its Augsburg site. Key aspects of this concept are the development of the location into a center of excellence for manufacturing processes of LED-based products or the expansion of the fluorescent lamp production. Osram will invest a low three-digit million euro figure over the coming years in its LED assembly plant in the Chinese province of Jiangsu. In the final completion stage, 1,700 employees will manufacture products for key segments of the Chinese market and entire Asian region. The region will already account for around half of the global general lighting market in five years’ time.

you paid for it; no one wanted to rent it anymore
Bright ideas are often depicted with a light bulb. And in Hollywood these days, that light is more likely to be LED than the traditional tungsten.
The industry standard is shifting as cinematographers are turning to light-emitting diodes to illuminate their sets more efficiently and with less heat than tungsten lighting, according to Variety.
But not all LEDs are created the same, so companies that rent the equipment to productions are taking a wait-and-see approach to which brand will be in demand.
“Every cinematographer is going to have their own taste for how something should look, and right now, there are still questions about LED high bay light how different brands of LED lights will interact on a set,” Chris Rogers, national account manager for Cinelease – a rental company – told Variety. “So we're waiting to see what our customers decide they like.”
New technology is a tricky business for rental companies. And digital equipment in particular poses unique problems because it is updated more frequently than mechanical equipment and has a shorter lifespan.
“People got burned with camera equipment (in 2002), because just after ‘Star Wars: Episode 2 (Attack of the Clones)’ was shot using the Sony F900, there was very little lag time until the next round of digital cameras came out,” said Johnathon Amayo, VP of production and post-production for Moviola. “So, basically, if you carried the F900, once the (lower-cost) Red came out, you had a camera that was worth one-tenth of what you paid for it; no one wanted to rent it anymore.”
The transition to LED lighting appears to be taking longer than the move to digital cameras, creating headaches for rental houses. Lighting is a new frontier that has not been fully explored. There are many options available – LED and tungsten – and the market has not yet.spoken definitively on the matter.

Signed a separate pact to collaborate on developing LED technology
According to Maeil Business Newspaper reported Monday, citing securities and information-technology industry officials, Samsung Electronics and Osram AG have scrapped earlier plan to set up a joint venture to develop LED technology.
"Manager-level officials here had considered the joint venture issue after a financial firm has suggested, but we stopped the discussion at an initial stage," an official at Samsung Electronics, was quoted as saying. "We have cross license contract with Osram, so will maintain good relationship with it."
Early in August, the two companies agreed to settle all of their ongoing patent suits globally, and signed a separate pact to collaborate on developing LED technology. In addition, according to Reuters, the two companies also agreed to "cross-license each other's LED patents and drop all litigation related to lighting product technology that they filed last year against each other in South Korea, the United States, Japan, China and Germany."
Eye Lighting will move production of the Aphos-brand LED luminaires to its plant in Mentor and will sell the products under the Eye Lighting brand name.Tom Salpietra, president and CEO of Eye Lighting, said the Aphos line creates “greater scale for (the) business and strengthens (its) position and penetration in the fast-growing LED market.”Eye Lighting has 135 employees. In July, it opened a 2,000-square-foot luminaire design and assembly center within its Mentor building to further develop its LED and high-intensity discharge energy-efficient technologies.

The authors of the study are from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science
The nanostructures on an LED lens surface were fabricated by using a large-area nanotemplating and reconfigurable nanomolding with heat-induced shear thinning. The biologically inspired LED lens, distinct from a smooth surface lens, substantially increases light transmission over visible ranges, comparable to conventional antireflection coating. This biological inspiration can offer new opportunities for increasing the light extraction efficiency of high-power LED packages," they wrote. They noted that the conventional anti-reflection coating of existing LED lights is an expensive process. They said that conventional polymer lenses for LEDs are made by injection molding and then adding an antireflective coating with sputtering. Their method differed. They found that they could produce an anti-reflective plastic lens with just a single-step injection molding process. They said doing so meant driving down the cost of efficient LEDs. Their LED lens was made using a polyurethane-based optical resin. The authors of the study are from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, Firefly Institute, Korea Basic Science Institute, and Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science.

Systems built with such devices could be more compact
One system, capable of handling 6x2-inch substrates, focuses primarily on R&D, while the other system, a CRIUS, is designed for mass production, handling up to 31x2-inch or 3x6-inch substrates in one run.
Dr. Hui Yang, Director of SINANO, reports: “Our Nano-Devices and Materials Division will use these systems to develop new applications such as gallium nitride (GaN) lasers on the 2-inch R&D system and GaN growth on silicon substrates and high electron mobility transistors (HEMT) on the CRIUS system.”
The Nano-Devices and Materials Division was established in 2006, with one of its research groups focusing on GaN-based high power light-emitting diodes (LED) and laser diodes (LDs) with an AIXTRON CCS 6x2-inch system. The division now wants to extend its expertise into the power electronics field.
GaN-based HEMTs are being widely developed on silicon as a route to mass production of high power density devices for radio frequency and power switching applications. Systems built with such devices could be more compact and more power efficient, needing less complex circuitry with fewer passive components and reduced cooling requirements.

These products will provide an ideal replacement for incandescent
In indoor applications, where warm light is particularly important, these products will provide an ideal replacement for incandescent and halogen lamps. In outdoor applications, such as road lighting, the high light output, high colour rendering and warmer appearance provides a particularly suitable replacement to SON-T street lights.
“The research and development cooperation between CREE and ALT will allow us to provide suitable products for a wide variety of customers and continue to facilitate the growth of the LED industry”, commented Aeon Lighting Technology CEO, James Laing.
We are cautious about short-term business conditions since there is still no clear sign that the economy is improving,” added Mr. Peeler. “However, the LED market is getting better – general lighting is growing, excess capacity is being absorbed, and customers are reporting more stable business conditions. An MOCVD order snap-back is inevitable as LEDs go from 5% of all lighting to over 30% over the next few years. Insatiable demand for storage will drive future hard drive industry capital expenditures and technology investments. We anticipate that Veeco’s orders will improve in the coming quarters.”
“In the meantime, we are focused on lowering our cost structure while protecting investments in R&D and new products,” concluded Mr. Peeler. “Our goal is to remain profitable while funding our future. We are market leaders with exceptional technology and customer roadmap alignment. We are well positioned for future growth as our end markets recover and the world adopts solid state lighting.”

The price of LED light sources in the future
A unique feature of the X10 is a combination of small size, state-of-the-art module efficiency over 110lm/W, the optimal price and convenient size for mounting. Optogan has already produced modules consisting of 72 items that can be easily divided into LED elements of smaller sizes and power. The X10 concept offers the maximum possible variety starting with single unit of 10 W. The biggest X10 module can provide maximum luminous flux of nearly 80,000 lumens, while the power consumption is only 720W. Due to various sizes and forms of the elements, X10 can be used for various applications, such as halogen lamp analogues, light fittings, single designer lamps, fixtures with reflectors, as well as high power industrial or street lights. The ceramic base and product material selection is based on long life performance by design.
Optogan`s X10 patented design is unique on the LED market and was developed jointly with the well-known Russian Innovation Center "Skolkovo". The pilot sample of the X10 solution was already introduced in 2011 and has by now won the recognition of the international community at the largest lighting exhibitions, such as Light & Building in Frankfurt am Main or Strategies in Light Europe in Munich. “It's great that, thanks to the material and technical base of the Innovation Centre Skolkovo our breakthrough technology does not stagnate in the laboratory, and only after a year goes to the mass market. It is a high contribution for the hi-tech industry” – emphasized Vladislav Bougrov.
Optogan`s X10 module is a new generation of integrated solutions like LED Chip-on-Board, which are the main focus of technological development of the global LED industry. As Vladislav Bugrov explained during the opening ceremony, Optogan strives “to make the transition from a single breakthrough LED, which is already implemented in the technology Chip-on-board, to the integrated lighting system, including the assembly of LEDs on a single substrate, the circuit elements and the power control (driver), as well as the primary optics. Such a breakthrough is possible due to the continuous research, conducted at the Optogan`s research and development center”. According to Bougrov, “full integration, in particular, will significantly reduce the cost of the production process, significantly decreasing the price of LED light sources in the future”.
Zhaga has made the interface specification ‘Book 3’ publicly available as free download from its website (zhagastandard.org). Book 3 defines the interface for a small, round, LED light engine suitable for spot lighting and other applications that need a point light source.

The results can start to reshape an industry
This collaboration was about giving the architecturalcommunity what it wanted—an uninterrupted ceilingand lighting system in one package that makes designer projects much easier,” says Jaime Irick, general manager forGE Lighting North America Professional Solutions. “When two innovation leaders like USG and GE come together as our teams have done, the results can start to reshape an industry.”
GE’s Lumination LED Linear Recessed Luminairesare available in four- and five-foot fixtures measuring four or six inches wide to fit Logix layouts. They consume less electricity than traditional light sources and last years longer before needing replacement.
“The continuous look of Logix panels and Lumination LED lighting is ideal for environments where a clean, uncluttered ceiling is as much a fashionable as functional solution,” says Chris Griffin, USG executive vice president, operations. “It has long been a problem to piece together a custom look without the custom price, but now specifying, estimating, ordering and constructing the ceiling your customer always wanted is simple.”
The fourth Professional Lighting Design Convention will be held in Copenhagen, Denmark from 31. October to 2. November, 2013, following in the footsteps of PLDC 2007 in London, UK, PLDC 2009 in Berlin, Germany and PLDC 2011 in Madrid, Spain.

the ideal way to present merchandise in the best possible lighting settings
The LEC Supermarket area helps planners get a better understanding on the impact of light on different types of food.It has been proven that lighting plays a significant role in the display of products and impacts how a product looks. An example is the use of white light—while it can make fish look fresh, it has a reverse impact on meats, which look better under yellow light.
In this area, visitors experience the ideal way to present merchandise in the best possible lighting settings. Lighting has been found to play significant role in creating a shop’s brand identity while making products look impressive and boost sales. The display demonstrates the various scenarios of lighting that would typically vary while selling ornaments and watches compared to selling clothes and gadgets.
The Zero Energy House, owned by Auckland couple Jo Woods and Shay Brazier, is being built in Point Chevalier using careful design and solar power. Zero Energy means that, over the course of a year, the house will generate as much energy as Shay and Jo will use. At times they will generate more energy than they need, and will use a grid connection to sell this surplus energy back to their electricity company.
Jo and Shay chose Philips’ lighting products for the house because the extensive range of Philips Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) met all of their lighting design requirements. The lighting for the house has been designed so that each area is lit according to its specific needs, which means that the right amount of light is delivered to make each area work as it should. The targeted lighting design strategy also meant that the number of energy efficient lights and the power of these lights was carefully considered, reducing both the cost of installing the lights in the house and also reducing the ongoing cost to operate them.

the last year is also taken as an indication that necessary improvements in size
The significant equity infusion received by the Company from this group of world-class institutional investors is expected to be sufficient to finance Lighting Science Group's strategy to achieve profitability.
As part of this transaction, the Company has agreed to appoint a Director designated by Zouk Capital to fill the current vacancy on the Board of Directors.
Currently, the report suggests the OLED market struggles on account of several separate factors. It highlights the fact that because OLEDs are classed within the luxury market the prospect of increased interest and development could be a called into question in times of reduced wealth and higher unemployment. The report also argues that potentially lucrative office lighting market is still looking very elusive.
The fact that little news has emerged from the sector in the last year is also taken as an indication that necessary improvements in size and performance have not been achieved.

it is generally understood that conventional energy conservation
According to the Energy Information Administration [EIA], on a dollar-per-unit of-production basis, the level of subsidies received by the wind and solar industries were almost 100 times greater than those for conventional energy," stated Richard Solarz, senior director of technology at LED linear high bay light and Randy Moorhead, VP for government relations at Philips Electronics, co-leaders of the group advocating for greater DOE support for SSL.
"We believe that it is generally understood that conventional energy conservation -- specifically lighting -- efforts are under-supported."
SEMI added that it hopes the meeting will help secure support for SSL beyond its funding levels of the past four years, despite the obvious and formidable pressures on national budgets. "Despite the austerity mood in Washington, SEMI is confident that increased budget requests for LED-based lighting technologies will receive considerable bicameral and bipartisan support in the legislative branch during upcoming legislative sessions," the group stated.

the deviation is easy to perceive through different color coordinates and brightnesses
Designers and developers of lamps are often faced with the problem that the standard LED shipping dimensions and configurations of certain series types contain a product group, which can possibly include LEDs with different color and brightness levels. A highly precise sorting always presents a logistical challenge: Even the most modern LED-production is subject to certain deviations through the complex production process. Particularly by LED high bay light, the deviation is easy to perceive through different color coordinates and brightnesses. In particular if you are dealing with comparing LEDs from different producers, developers often have the difficulty as to how the LED-quality actually corresponds with the brightness and color coordinates in accordance with CIE-standard (x/y-diagram). LEDs also change their color and brightness with increasing temperature. Thus, the normal testing procedure only takes 25 ms after the LED-production so they do not warm up. In order to be able to synchronize this "measuring frame" of 25 ms exactly with the flash time, normally very extensive and expensive laboratory instruments are required.
The portable, easy to operate and inexpensive spectrometer GL Spectis 1.1 is used here: It can determine brightness values with a current duration of 25 ms and a precision of +/- 4%. A special trig-out-connection emits a signal at a fixed point of time of the measurement, for example, to an external current source so that the LED illuminates exactly during the measuring period. In this way, the user can simulate the measurement conditions that exist by the manufacturer during the production and development test.
In connection with the mobile integrating sphere GL Opti Sphere 48, the new device was designed so that it reliably measures lumen values and all photometric values of not only individual LEDs, but also other small light sources. Moreover, the system simultaneously scales the spectra. Thus, it determines reliable values for color coordinates, CCT and CRI in accordance with the CIE-standard. Through this, the radiant power and luminous flux can be determined quickly.
Different than by normal spectrometers that can only measure individual LEDs, the mini-spectrometer can take measurements for Led linear high bay light that are already found on a printed board through the integrating sphere with a diameter of 48 mm. Through this, the influences of electronic construction elements, drivers and current supplies can be determined on the spectral properties of the LEDs to be measured as well as the usage of dimmers and cooling elements.

if such lamps are used for illuminating your house
A number of retailers, particularly hardware stores, are selling rough service bulbs online.
But the National Measurement Office, the Government agency responsible for enforcing the ban on traditional bulbs, warned householders against buying the rough service versions.
An official guidance paper says such bulbs are "declared by the manufacturer as unsuitable" for illuminating household rooms and adds: "Consideration should be given to the terms and conditions of any household insurance policy if such lamps are used for illuminating your house."
A Defra spokesman said: "The final stage of the EU phase-out of incandescent light bulbs will mean that from September 1, 25W and 40W bulbs will no longer be allowed into the market. However, this does not prevent retailers selling existing bulbs they already have in stock."
DIY chain B&Q said it supports the shift away from traditional bulbs.

the material properties required by industry for lighting
The new lights are being paid for with a $3 million loan from the California Energy Commission. Although the light from the led high bay lighting looks better than before, "energy savings for us was the focus" of the replacements, he said.
The city spends $650,000 annually on street lighting energy.
"Some agencies that have switched over to LED have seen well over 60 percent savings," he said. Hayward staff members estimate the city will cut its energy consumption by about half, with the savings being used to pay off the $3 million loan.
The city is scheduled to pay off the loan in seven to 10 years, but it could be sooner if energy savings exceed 50 percent.
Canadian firm Meaglow has made a breakthrough on a low temperature Migration Enhanced Afterglow film growth technique to produce a thick InGaN layer with strong yellow emission, for increasing the efficiency and lowering production costs of green LEDs and laser diodes.
It is looking for collaboration opportunities to enhance the material properties required by industry for lighting, display, medical, and military applications and other uses.
Meaglow's Chief Scientist K. Scott Butcher, says, "It's the LED high bay light brightest p-n junction I've ever seen in my life, and its right in the green gap."

LED lighting adoption in the automotive category by the end of the decade
According to a recent market report, McKinsey & Company predicts a sharp increase in LED lighting adoption in the automotive category by the end of the decade.
In last year's automotive lighting market, LEDs claimed a 12 percent share, contributing to the overall category's revenue of $18.1 billion. By 2020, researchers expect to see LED share nearly triple to 34 percent of the overall automotive lighting market. This forecast is based on the anticipated growth in LED headlight adoption by OEMs during the next eight years.
Once automakers re-engineer a vehicle's forward lighting system to accommodate LED, OSRAM suggests that broadening the led high bay lighting application across other vehicle lines and platforms will come more easily.
India Seamless group, a Pune-based small aircraft manufacturer, has make inroad into consumer lighting business by a new subsidiary LightO Technologies which aims to penetrate the markets in India, LED high bay light, Bangladesh and Nepal.

LED solutions designed to inspire the imaginations of lighting designers
Simplifying development of products such as wall-washers, moving-head spotlights, tunable retrofits and even remote phosphor-based lamps, the LUXEON Z will give engineers a modular approach to developing entertainment, architectural and specialty lighting products. Moreover, the un-encapsulated chips can easily accommodate custom optics, eliminating the need for complex, inefficient secondary lenses. With the launch of LUXEON Z, Philips Lumileds has demonstrated its commitment to proving state-of-the-art LED solutions designed to inspire the imaginations of lighting designers.
Eco Engineering LLC, a specialized provider of energy-efficient lighting services and upgrades, identified and implemented the lighting solution for Medical Mutual of Ohio utilizing 2,600 volumetric Relight kits. The Relight kits were used to retrofit the deep-cell parabolic luminaires throughout the building’s interior. The 2’ x 4’ volumetric Relight kits feature energy-efficient RT8R recessed lighting components that were quickly and easily installed into existing fixtures, eliminating the need to break the ceiling plane.
The energy-efficient Relight assemblies are expected to reduce electrical demand from the onset of installation, including a reduction in the air conditioning load because the new lighting generates less heat. The building’s total annual energy usage is also expected to decrease by more than 50 percent, or from 2.5 million kilowatt hours to about 1.2 million kilowatt hours.
“Volumetric Relight kits are an ideal solution for renovating inefficient and outdated lighting systems,” said Kurt Vogel, Lithonia Lighting Director of Product and Market Development for Relight. “In addition to providing energy savings, the Relight kits improve the quality of lighting by delivering the ideal amount of soft, comfortable light throughout the space. The visually uncomfortable checker-board or cave effect created by parabolic and lensed troffer systems is completely eliminated.”

They are made in the USA from imported parts
Located around the tree-lined pathways and stairs of the 1.7-acre park are 13 lampposts whose ballasted 130-watt high-pressure-sodium post-top bulbs have recently been replaced with 27-watt LED lamps from LEDtronics.
Apart from the energy savings of 103 watts per unit, the LED lamps offer much longer product lifespans than HPS or Metal Halide, resulting in reduced replacement and maintenance costs; improved visibility and enhanced night vision (as compared with high glare from HID lamps), and reduction of hot-spots, all helping with crime prevention; reduced light pollution, because light can be directed where it is needed and not into surrounding office buildings; instant illumination with no delay in re-strike, and no ultraviolet emissions that attract insects.
The installed warm-white LEDtronics acorn-style post-top lamps operate on a 100-277VAC wide voltage range and provide a uniform pattern of light. The ETL-listed units feature a ventilated assembly that maintains a cool-running lamp, and an optimized circuitry that corrects the power factor for maximum efficiency. They are made in the USA from imported parts and meet Buy American requirements within the ARRA program. The lamps come with a 5-year factory warranty.
Similar LEDtronics post-top LED lamps have been installed in neighborhoods all around Southern California, including the Pasadena Civic Center and its residential streets; Mountain Gate Park in Corona; all along Linden Avenue and the Metro station in Carpinteria; Library Park in Monrovia, and streets in Santa Ana.
The lamps come with a 5-year factory warranty.

parking structure luminaires to illuminate the exteriors of seven schools
Chair Professor of Electrical Engineering at the National Central University of Taiwan, comments, “Demand for low-cost GaN-based power devices in high-efficiency and high-power systems continues to increase. To satisfy this need we therefore plan to transfer our specially developed semiconductor materials technology to industry, for a pilot initially, and then for large-scale production. In order to succeed in this venture, the very best deposition equipment will be required, such as the AIXTRON multi-wafer MOCVD system on order. This system is an excellent match for the heteroepitaxial growth of gallium nitride structures on large area silicon wafers, with a view to providing high-performance devices as cost-efficiently as possible. Furthermore, the excellent reputation of the led high bay lighting support service gives us great confidence for this very important new project.“
The National Central University (NCU) of Taiwan has a strong global reputation for research and academic excellence. Through its cooperative education programs and research projects, cutting-edge research and innovative learning, NCU will remain a first-rate university in Taiwan and worldwide. NCU research programs are wide ranging and include complex systems, liquid-crystals, neural networks, phonon and photon lattices, semiconductors, magnetic thin-films and superconductivity.
Newport News Public School District in Virginia recently installed more than 185 Cree, Inc. (Nasdaq: CREE) LED exterior luminaires, becoming the first Virginia school district in the area with a significant LED lighting installation. The district selected Cree THE EDGE® security, area and parking structure luminaires to illuminate the exteriors of seven schools: General Stanford Elementary, Greenwood Elementary, Lee Hall Elementary, Palmer Elementary, Crittenden Middle, Booker T. Washington Middle and Denbigh High.
“These energy efficient lights virtually eliminate maintenance, provide the district with dramatic energy savings and also reflect the community’s commitment to sustainability,” said Keith Webb, executive director of plant services for the Newport News Public School District. “The LED high bay light furthers our goal of enhancing and bettering the learning environment, while saving money for the schools and tax payers.”

he value chain from development and production to sales
The new assembly plant enables us to better participate in the strong market growth in China and further extend our solid position in Asia,” said Wolfgang Dehen, CEO of OSRAM AG. “Growing at a remarkable rate, Jiangsu Province’s LED industry is at the forefront in China. We will fully support Osram’s development in Wuxi with the highest quality service, and we also hope Osram can expand its investment in Wuxi to have the plant up and running as soon as possible,” said Xueyong Li, Governor of Jiangsu Province.
The contracts for the new Wuxi location were only signed in May this year. The groundbreaking now marks the beginning of the construction of the 100,000 square meter compound. Osram will invest a low three-digit million euro figure over the next five years whilst also securing comprehensive support from its Chinese partners. In the final completion stage, the new assembly plant will be able to accommodate up to 1,600 employees.
With the new plant in Wuxi, Osram is responding to the increasing demand for LED-based products in the fast-growing Asian market, thereby sustainably reinforcing its regional position in the growth region Asia. This comes against the backdrop that the LED backend capacity at the Osram plant in Penang, where chips are both produced and packaged, is expected to reach its limits within the next few years. In addition to its two frontend production plants, Osram will in future have two backend sites. “With highly skilled personnel, a good infrastructure and experienced partners, Wuxi provides the best conditions for our new LED assembly,” said Aldo Kamper, CEO of the Osram Opto Semiconductors business unit.
The Asian region already accounts for around 35 percent of today’s global general lighting market, which is expected to increase to 45 percent by 2020 according to recent studies. The Chinese lighting market alone, worth over 8 billion Euro today, is predicted to more than double by 2020. In fiscal year 2011, Osram generated about one fifth of its revenue in the Asia-Pacific region, where it employs over 16,000 employees. This workforce is larger than that of any other region worldwide, and roughly half of it is employed in China. Osram has marketed products in the region for about 80 years, covering all major stages in the value chain from development and production to sales.

displayed engineering intelligence that was simply unmatched
Browsing by competing LED Grow Light booths were many nice looking and colorful products, but none that stood out more than Hydro Grow. The sheer intensity of X2 left passers stunned that LEDs could produce such results and the modular build design displayed engineering intelligence that was simply unmatched.
As of June 30, 2012, the company’s backlog was $1.6 billion. This included approximately $758.6 million in the polysilicon segment, $137.8 million in the PV segment and $697.5 million in the sapphire segment. Included in the total backlog was approximately $149.3 million of deferred revenue.
New orders for the second quarter of calendar 2012 were $13.8 million and included $0.4 million of polysilicon orders, $8.5 million of PV orders and $4.9 million in sapphire orders. The company had $31.9 million of negative adjustments to backlog related to the termination of a single ASF sapphire contract which the company had previously indicated it anticipated due to the customer’s failure to perform.
We are pleased with our performance in the June quarter as we exceeded expectations, a notable accomplishment given the continued headwinds in the solar and LED markets that we serve,” said Tom Gutierrez, president and chief executive officer. “Our PV and sapphire businesses performed in line with our expectations while our polysilicon business out-performed with an incremental $53 million of revenue recognized in the quarter. Our total backlog remains solid and our assessment of backlog risk remains unchanged from our analysis one quarter ago.
